Breakfast with the Owls, Intriguing Owls, Remarkable Woodpecker Programs

Treat your taste buds to a locally sourced artisan breakfast of buckwheat crepes with goat chèvre cheese, wild boar bacon, gluten-free quiche with seasonal vegetable, and organic, fair-trade coffee. The event will feature a chance to meet the Center’s live owl ambassadors, the story of the Owl Center, and a live auction. You’ll also go home with your choice of exceptional owl art created by talented children from all over the world. All proceeds from the event will go toward acquiring the building site for the Owl Center’s future home.

The intriguing array of auction items from around the region and world include Tyto alba wine brought back from the World Owl Conference in Portugal, a cashmere shawl from Nepal, a Japanese dinner for eight in New Brighton, MN, a one-night stay and dinner for two at the Hilton-Mall of America, a set of replica Yup’ik Short-eared Owl masks, chocolate bourbon pecan pie, and much more.

Local producers donating their goods to put on the breakfast include Schech’s Mill, Buffalo Gal, Carlson Roasting Company, Ethan’s Eggs, Valley of the Goats, and some private individuals.

Cost to participate in the Breakfast with the Owls is $75/person or $600 for a table of eight. For those who cannot attend, proxy bidding on auction items is possible. For more information or to register go to www.InternationalOwlCenter.org. Registration is requested by June 30.

Author/photographer/naturalist Stan Tekiela will present two programs later that same day in Houston, based on his books related to the Houston area. At 12:30 he will present “Intriguing Owls” at the International Owl Center, followed by a book signing. His book by the same name features 4 photos of one of the Owl Center’s birds and all of his specimen photos are from the Owl Center.

This program is free to those participating in the Breakfast, or regular admission fees for others ($7 adults; $4 ages 4-17; 3 and under and members free). He will also present “Remarkable Woodpeckers” at the Houston Community Center at 3:00 PM. The woodpecker tongue photos were taken at the Houston Nature Center and the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker photos were taken in rural Houston. Cost is $5/person, with all proceeds going to the Houston Nature Center.
