Canoe: Paddle, Bike & Run Triathlon OR Du: Run, Bike, Run Duathlon

The 1st Annual Canoe and Du will take place on the beautiful La Crosse River and La Crosse River state trail along with the surrounding West Salem neighborhoods. This event is a great fit for all abilities, family friendly, and open to beginners. It tests skills in paddling, road cycling, and walking/running. Athletes can compete as individuals or as teams.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, 2016 starting at 9:00am at Veteran’s Memorial Park in West Salem, WI. As a community with a wealth of different landscapes, we are always excited to announce new outdoor events utilizing those areas in a continued effort to strengthen our community through healthy living. Scott Cooper, UW-L Biology Professor and Outdoor Recreation Alliance advocate, believes “La Crosse is a great town for outdoor activities including paddling on the Mississippi, Black and La Crosse Rivers. The Canoe and Du event gives participants an opportunity to paddle a local river, bike through scenic hills, and run on one of our rails to trails projects.”

As the first event of this type in the area, it will bring new awareness and activity to the community. James Murray, UW-L Economics Professor, states, “It will be a fun event to introduce active people to new sports and new ways to enjoy the outdoors.” Additionally Murray touches on on the value beginner-level aspect of the event saying, “We have many seasoned runners and cyclists who will be beginners to canoeing. Some canoeing enthusiasts will be beginners to triathlons. And many people will be beginners to all the sports but excited for a new way to be active and enjoy outdoor recreation.”

Proceeds of this event will benefit the Y’s Annual Campaign and a donation will be made to the 7 Rivers Region Outdoor Recreation Alliance for their support and time making this event happen. A special thanks to Coulee Health Spine & Bodyworks for their sponsorship and support of the first Annual Canoe & Du.
