Elroy Sparta Trail

Elroy Sparta Trail is 32 miles in length, and connects with the La Crosse River State Trail in Sparta.  Traveling east from Sparta, this trail passes through: Norwalk, Wilton, Kendall and Elroy.

The Elroy Sparta Trail is best known for its tunnels.  Three old railroad tunnels cut through the hills of the driftless region.  Two are 1/4 mile long and one is 3/4 mile long.  You have to bring a flashlight and walk your bike through the tunnel.  At tunnel 3 (the big one) look for the old stone flu at the eastern entrance as well as an old building where the men who opened and closed the giant tunnel doors would stay.

The Elroy Sparta Trail is part of 101 miles of interconnecting state bike trails and is the original Rails to Trails bike trail.  The oldest of its kind in the state.

While the trails never close, the tunnels do.  So if you are looking to do some winter hiking, be aware that the tunnel doors may be closed.
