“Never Give Up” Exhibit @ The Pump House Regional Arts Center

"Never Give Up" Exhibit @ The Pump House Regional Arts Center | La Crosse | Wisconsin | United States

Works and exhibit statement by Jean Hayden: “This exhibition is a history of my endeavors as a visual artist. My passion for music has transferred over to my passion for drawing and painting. As a botanical artist I spent hours on one piece…sketching, blending and designing. It became the joy of my life. When macular degeneration began to change my life, I was not willing to give up that joy of creating. Working with local watercolor instructor Pam Lee, we have together developed some techniques that “keep me in the game” so to speak. Working with black gesso on watercolor paper I can bring images to life that are in my mind. I can add color after the gesso has dried, or leave the black and white painting as a spontaneous statement of the moment. My hope is that this show will give others encouragement to “Never Give Up.” Get out there, experience life and keep doing what gives you joy.”

The artist reception will be taking place on May 28th from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, so come meet the artist and appreciate her work.

Normal Gallery Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11 am-7 pm and Saturdays, noon-4 pm, so stop by and take in some local art.

La Crosse SOUP! A fun monthly micro-granting opportunity for good people with good ideas! @ The Root Note
May 27 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm
La Crosse SOUP! A fun monthly micro-granting opportunity for good people with good ideas! @ The Root Note | La Crosse | Wisconsin | United States

Do you want to help make La Crosse a better place? Come join us for SOUP NIGHT where people with cool ideas for improving La Crosse come because they need a couple hundred bucks to make it happen, and SOUP NIGHT helps them get it.

At La Crosse SOUP people from across the community come together to break bread, celebrate La Crosse, and provide microgrants to those planning creative projects that aim to make La Crosse a better place to be.

Cool, right?

So how then does this work…? For a donation of $5 at the door, attendees receive FOOD (homemade soup and fresh bread) AND A VOTE and hear from four people who want to improve the community in some way. Can you give more than $5? Sure, but you still get one vote. That’s one of the beautiful things about SOUP, it’s about community support that can come from almost anyone
.
Each presenter shares their idea and answers four questions from the audience. We know people are busy so each presentation lasts four minutes with a few more minutes at the end for the questions. After the presentations we all share a meal together, talk about the ideas that were presented, and vote on the project they think will benefit the city the most. At the end of the night we count the ballots, and the winning idea goes home with all of the money raised at the door to carry out their project. Winners come back to a future SOUP dinner to report their project’s progress.

La Crosse SOUP is a B.Y.O.B. affair – Bring Your Own Bowl!

TENTATIVE Schedule for the evening:
6:00pm :: Doors Open
6:15 :: Food served
6:15 – 6:45 :: Pitches + Q/A
6:45 – 7:00 :: Voting
7:00 :: Voting ends and ballots are tallied
7:15 :: Winning Project is announced and money is awarded > Event concludes.

However guests are encouraged to stay and hangout afterwards!

Karst Geology
May 30 @ 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

The bedrock of our Driftless Area include dolomites and limestones that are continually dissolved by water, creating interconnected cracks and layers. The  resulting “karst” landscape includes sinkholes, caves, disappearing streams,and coldwater trout springs. Deeper  rocks of the Driftless include sandstones that serve as our groundwater aquifers. These formations are now being mined for “frac” sand used to extract oil and  gas from shales in many states outside the Driftless. Unfortunately, our  beautiful karst geology facilitates the passage into our groundwater aquifers of pollutants generated by frac sand mining and careless farming. And once polluted, our  aquifers will remain polluted forever. Join us  to learn about our local landscape. One hour lecture discussion followed by examination of geologic formations and karst features in the field.

This exhibit will be displayed in the Front Gallery and the artist reception will be held on June 5th from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Regular Gallery Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11 am-7 pm and Saturdays, noon-4 pm.

About Lee Jackson

Lee is relatively new to photography, having learned didactically over the past three years. Her creative and educational background is in writing, particularly poetry and short stories. After graduating from West Salem High School, she attended UW-Madison where she majored in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. After college, Lee moved to the La Crosse area where she stumbled upon her love of taking nature photographs during her daily walks on the few acres of wood and ravine where she grew up.
