Chicago @ Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts (UW-La Crosse)
Jul 5 all-day
Chicago @ Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts (UW-La Crosse) | La Crosse | Wisconsin | United States

The UW-La Crosse Department of Theatre Arts’ SummerStage production, Chicago, will razzle and dazzle audiences with its smooth music and electric dance numbers as it weaves the tale of murder, greed, fame and all that jazz.

Winner of 6 Tony Awards, Chicago will show June 26-27 and July 2-3 at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees on June 28 and July 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Toland Theatre in the UW-L Center for the Arts, on the corner of 16th and Vine Streets.

By the musical duo John Kander and Fred Ebb, Chicago follows the story of two rival murderesses, nightclub star Velma Kelly and hopeful housewife, Roxie Hart. Roxie is an ordinary woman dreaming of the glitz and glamor of 1920’s Chicago nightlife who gets thrust into the spotlight after she murders her lover and is sent to murderer’s row in the Cook County jail, run by the corrupt Mama Morten. Desperate to avoid conviction, Roxie dupes the public, the media, and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, by hiring the slick and savvy attorney, Billy Flynn, to manipulate her crime into an extravagant story and sensational headlines. With a cast of fierce characters with vivid and colorful personalities, Chicago is sure to sizzle from beginning to end.

Tickets go on sale at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 22. Box office hours are 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before show times. (Box office will be closed July 4.) Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for senior/non UWL students and $10 for UW-L students; call (608) 785-8522.

Spoon Carving Circle 2nd Thursday every Month @ The Ark
Jul 9 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

The night before Valentine’s Day, 2014, six people gathered in Driftless Folk School’s intimate little office space in The Ark in Viroqua for the first monthly Driftless Folk School Carving Circle. We ran the gamut of ages and experience, from veteran spoon carvers and a promising young new carver, to a curious onlooker – turned – carving convert.
The latter purchased a “sloyd” and a “hook” knife from another participant and was … hooked. Mostly, people worked on spoons they had already started, shared techniques, tips and stories, and had a grand old time. All carving projects are welcome; bowyers, chip carvers, whittlers… spoons just happen to be the most common. Bring some wood, a carving tool or two, and a Band Aid, and a good joke wouldn’t hurt either. If you don’t have any wood or tools, come anyway. There’s a good chance someone might be able to share wood, or even sell a couple tools.  Spoon Gathering in September!
Dates: Second Thursday every Month:  Jun 11, Jul 9, Aug 13, Sept 10, Oct 8
Time: 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $2 per person to cover space use fees
Location: The Ark, 401 East Jefferson Viroqua, WI- Summer months we will meet at our Campus-check Facebook
